The total number of cleaning companies has increased by almost 2,000 in one year. In total, there are now 19,615 cleaning companies in the Netherlands, of which as many as 14,615 are companies with only one employee. This is according to an analysis of data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

The CBS publishes quarterly statistics on the number of companies in the Netherlands. These show that the number of registered cleaning companies has more than doubled since 2009. At that time, the Netherlands had 9,405 cleaning companies. This year, there are as many as 19,615. What is striking is that the number of self-employed people has increased over the years. In 2007, for instance, 56% of the companies were sole proprietorships without staff, now that percentage has increased to 75 per cent. In absolute terms, almost 10,000 self-employed people have been added in 15 years. Now there are 14,615 self-employed people registered as cleaning companies. In 2007, there were 4,730.

According to CBS, the cleaning sector consists of 17,800 natural persons without legal status and 1,185 legal entities. Arranged into different company sizes, the sector looks as follows:

  • 1 person employed: 14,615
  • 2 persons employed: 2,400
  • 3-5 persons employed: 1,005
  • 5-10 persons employed: 705
  • 10-20 persons employed: 430
  • 20-50 persons employed: 265
  • 50-100 persons employed: 110
  • >100 persons employed: 85

To the above list, it should be noted that the 85 cleaning companies employing more than 100 people represent the vast majority of the cleaning market due to the large employee numbers at the large cleaning companies in the Netherlands.

Cleaning company growth fits national trend

The growth in the number of businesses is in line with the national trend. A total of 163,000 businesses were added last year, a growth of 8.5 per cent. As a result, the Netherlands had more than 2 million companies for the first time on 1 January 2022. The cleaning sector grew by a whopping 11 per cent last year. Only in the year 2007 was growth just as strong. In the intervening years, the industry grew between 2 and 7 per cent.

More than 700 cleaning companies were set up per quarter in 2021, A total of 2,295 new cleaning companies were set up. This was offset by a dissolution of 1,100 cleaning companies, CBS said.
