Duty for publicly accessible indoor spaces
The duty applies to publicly accessible indoor spaces, which includes shops and the public parts of government buildings. The duty will also apply in education, at railway stations and for contact professions. However, exceptions can be made if, for example, someone cannot wear a cap for medical reasons.
Offering space as an employer
The duty may also be waived if an employee would otherwise have to stand with a cap on for eight hours, Health Minister Hugo de Jonge explained in a debate on Tuesday. In such situations, “you may provide space as an employer” to wear a ‘face shield’. However, this must be a splash shield that covers the entire face, and not “one of those half things under your chin”, De Jonge said.
